Operations Engineer – Protection & Control

About the position:

The Operations Engineer – Protection & Control will work in a team environment, on a variety of engineering projects related to solar and/or solar plus storage plants and electrical power system troubleshooting and improvement. The Operations Engineer will manage operating improvement initiatives, retrofit projects, reliability improvement projects, root cause analysis and major repairs in coordination with on and offsite support. The primary responsibilities for this position include the remediation and reliability improvement of existing protective relaying and substation equipment with opportunity for cross-over support of solar and battery storage assets supporting Asset management and O&M. The day-to-day activities have a wide degree of variety involving multiple operating projects simultaneously.

 

As the Operations Engineer, you will:

Assist in planning and coordination of on-site and off-site activities related to retrofit and repair of the company’s protective relaying equipment .

· Communication and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.

· Review fault and event records from operational systems to assist in issue resolution.

· Review studies, protection settings, & test reports for new & onboarding projects.

· Examine relay settings and logic equations for confirmation of system operation in accordance with design.

· Assist and participate in functional witness testing with internal & external stakeholders.

· Assist in coordination with interconnecting utility, 3rd party contractors, and 3rd party engineering consultants.

· Assist with application literature, instruction manuals, and data sheets.

· Assist in troubleshooting efforts, including plan development and execution to resolve functional deficiencies.

· Handles high priority RTU programming and in-house in SCADA testing initiatives.

· Leads commissioning, maintenance, & testing operations

· Based on guidance from AM and O&M evaluate equipment performance and behavior, report and recommend design or operational modifications. Make clear concise recommendations taking considerations of performance, timing, capital expenditures, and budgeting.

· Lead the root cause analysis and remediation plans for defective equipment, specifically relating to protective relaying systems.

· Establish and manage relationships with service providers/ Owner’s Engineer / external consultants to evaluate and supervise repair and or enhancement work stream. Ensure relevant standards are implemented for the successful return to service of repaired units in accordance with design and supplier standards.

· Provide subject matter expertise to internal and external teams regarding testing procedures and standards.

· Contribute to the creation and regular updating of engineering and testing specifications leveraging lessons learned from operating plants.

· Provide subject matter expertise in driving the solution for any plant operations issues reported by internal team.

· Review testing and maintenance reports for compliance with both internal and industry wide standards.

· Review repair, remediation, and repower proposals from external parties to ensure plant performance and reliability.

· Conduct work actions in compliance with industry standards for safety, quality, and environmental protection. Utilize technical expertise to enhance MN8’s culture of safety.

 

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:

1-2 years of experience in Protection & Controls Engineering with excellent understanding of project technical characteristics relating to energy generation.

· Knowledge of testing, commissioning, and maintenance of power equipment.

· Experience in operations of other power generation projects preferred.

· Experience in conducting site visits and evaluating technical issues in the field preferred.

· Engineering BSc Degree required in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.

· Expert knowledge of protection and controls engineering documents.

· Strong understanding of P&C Design principles for high voltage system

· Experience facilitating power system studies, relay coordination, and short-circuit calculations in CAPE, ETAP, ASPEN, OR SKMWorking knowledge of key renewable energy document types: project agreements and permits.

· Proficient in: SEL ACSELERATOR, GE EnerVista, AutoCAD, Excel, Word, Smartsheet.

· Demonstrated experience preparing or managing outside consultants in preparation of load flow and other grid studies.

· Understanding of protective relay testing and calibration via testing systems like Omicron, Doble F6150, Doble Protection Suite, EnoservRTS (RTS

· Familiarity with telecommunication and SCADA protocols like ModBus and SEL

· National Electric code (NEC) knowledge preferred.

· NETA, ANSI, IEEE standards knowledge preferred.

· Familiar with FERC, ISO rules and standards preferred.

· Understanding of NERC Transmission Protection Standard and Compliance

· Very organized and able to multitask effectively.

· Good communicator both written and verbal skill.

· Demonstrated ability to problem solve and determination to complete difficult projects.

· Demonstrated ability to improve processes and create efficiencies.

· Highly developed sense of professional ethics.

· Ability to work both on a team as well as independently.

· Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy.
