SCADA Engineering Manager

Position Overview:

The SCADA Engineering Manager will work in a team environment, on a variety of engineering projects related to solar and/or solar plus storage C&I, utility scale plants SCADA and DAS/Telecom network maintenance, troubleshooting and improvement. This position will manage operating improvement initiatives, design retrofit projects, reliability improvement projects, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, causal analysis and major repairs in coordination with on and offsite support pertaining to SCADA architecture, DAS platforms, networking and/or telecom needs.

 

As a SCADA Engineering Manager, you will:

  • As a SCADA Manager, you will work as part of a growing SCADA team that is responsible for developing and maintaining SCADA Infrastructure which manages operations for numerous clean energy projects including, solar, battery and solar plus storage throughout North America for over 900 plus assets.
  • Support operating facilities with upkeep/troubleshooting of existing substation controls systems, including communications processors, meters, PPC, EMS and protective relays
  • Support resolution of any field issues and coordinating the field personnel via ticketing system
  • Employ analytical, conceptual, and creative thinking skills to troubleshoot/improve SCADA system reliability to drive overall business and systems performance
  • Validate current SCADA architecture and ensure all additions and modifications are scalable
  • Lead the development and implementation of configuration plans for new project startup, including, but not limited to coordination with other utilities, development of points lists, RTU and ICCP configuration, HMI development, alarm scheme integration, and ancillary equipment setup to meet all relevant requirements
  • Provide expertise and guidance surrounding telemetry requirements of Independent System Operators and other offtakers
  • Drive operational standards during the implementation process
  • Evaluate and participate in development of SCADA structure standards of database attributes and displays within the Monarch system ensuring standards are scalable
  • Develop and maintain custom solutions to work around system limitations as necessary
  • Review and implement as-built documentation and changes to drawings into SCADA systems
  • Research, evaluate, and stay current on SCADA-related tools and technologies.
  • Work with other departments to ensure the SCADA environment addresses business requirements
  • Train/deliver various SCADA-related training to small/medium size groups
  • Manage relationships with different SCADA providers for maintaining contracts for preventative and troubleshooting scope.
  • Mentor team members on new SCADA technologies, tools, processes, and standards
  • Specification and configuration of SCADA, power plant controller, RTU, & IT equipment network
  • Design and document network segmentation, document network changes/updates based on site survey processes or replacements.
  • Assist in defining access control list, ports, and services for communication across Electronic Security Perimeters
  • Define and document demilitarized zones for communication to third parties
  • Creation of conceptual block diagrams
  • Conduct thorough reviews of detailed design drawings
  • Track design schedules, update all stakeholders and ensure that critical dates are met on time
  • Organize and transfer all as-built documentation to operations team including schematics, bills of materials, and programming settings
  • Provide details on project requirements to procure necessary telecom services
  • Manage the overall planning, direction, coordination, and execution of new OT systems
  • Provide strong, proactive, and assertive leadership for OT system completion
  • Provide delivery management oversight for OT networks and support teams responsible for a wide array of SCADA technologies and functions
  • Coordinate networking equipment configuration including specifying physical interfaces and protocols, assigning IP addresses, VLANs, and documenting firewall rules
  • Provide design and implementation support on the operational technology networks
  • Monitor construction progress remotely and via on-site inspections
  • Attend in-person meetings with stakeholders
  • Provide on-site programming and field support during commissioning for operational fleet and retrofit projects
  • Lead efforts with project team to develop operational plans to energize, commission, and turnover projects while maintaining NERC compliance
  • Coordinate with operations engineering and third-party customers to incorporate lessons learned into new designs
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technology through various training sessions and conferences

 

Our Ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 7 years of experience in Solar Engineering SCADA systems with excellent understanding of Electrical Control systems, telecom devices and substation devices. Storage Engineering is beneficial and plus.
  • Experience in conducting site visits and evaluating technical issues in the field preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge within areas of industrial automation
  • Strong knowledge about DAS and MET stations needs for smaller scale projects
  • Experience with IEC 61850, Modbus, OPC UA, and other control system protocols over TCP/IP or serial.
  • Experience with protective relays, substation and renewable energy automation systems.
  • Experience with SEL RTAC and IED architecture design and configuration.
  • Experience with NERC-CIP cyber security standards.
  • Experience with IEEE 1547 inverters controlled as a system.
  • Experience with OT single mode fiber optic network design.
  • Network troubleshooting skills and experience with network analysis tools such as Wireshark, Modbus Poll, etc.
  • Experience with Excel macros and VBA language.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Strong experience in reviewing Commissioning reports, FAT reports, diagnostics analysis.
  • Familiar with FERC, ISO rules and standards preferred.
  • Established record of experience with operations of SCADA systems, controls narrative and DAS/control systems.
  • Very organized and able to multitask effectively.
  • Good communicator both written and verbal skill.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and determination to complete difficult projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes and create efficiencies.
  • Highly developed sense of professional ethics.
  • Ability to work both on a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to interface effectively with cross functional employee group of all levels and competencies.
