SCADA Support Engineer

Position Overview:

The SCADA Support Engineer will work in a team environment on various engineering projects related to solar and/or solar plus storage C&I, utility-scale plants. This role involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving SCADA and DAS/Telecom networks. Responsibilities include root cause analysis, major repairs, and coordination with on-site and off-site support for SCADA architecture, DAS platforms, networking, and telecom needs.

 

As the SCADA Support Engineer, you will:

  • Maintain SCADA infrastructure for over 900 clean energy projects across North America, including solar, battery, and solar plus storage. 
  • Support operating facilities with upkeep and troubleshooting of substation control systems, including communications processors, meters, PPC, EMS, and protective relays. 
  • Resolve field issues and coordinate with field personnel via a ticketing system. 
  • Employ analytical and creative thinking to improve SCADA system reliability and performance. 
  • Validate and ensure scalability of SCADA architecture additions and modifications. 
  • Actively participate in the development of custom solutions to work around system limitations. 
  • Review and implement as-built documentation and changes to SCADA systems. 
  • Research and stay current on SCADA-related tools and technologies. 
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure SCADA systems meet business and operations requirements. 
  • Manage relationships with SCADA providers for maintenance contracts. 
  • Mentor new team members on new SCADA technologies and standards. 
  • Actively participate in specifying and configuring power plant controllers, RTUs, and IT equipment networks for all operational sites.  
  • Design and document network segmentation and changes. 
  • Define access control lists, ports, and services for communication across security perimeters. 
  • Organize and transfer as-built documentation to operations teams. 
  • Actively participate in the planning, coordination, and execution of new OT systems. 
  • Coordinate networking equipment configurations and documentation.  
  • Provide design and implementation support for operational technology networks. 
  • Attend in-person meetings with stakeholders. 
  • Provide on-site programming and field support during commissioning, when necessary.  
  • Incorporate lessons learned into new designs with operations engineering and third-party customers. 
  • Maintain up-to-date industry knowledge through training and conferences. 

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Renewable Engineering SCADA systems with a strong understanding of electrical control systems, telecom devices, and substation devices. 
  • Preferred experience in site visits, SCADA commissioning, technical issue evaluation, and Operations and Maintenance environments. 
  • Strong technical knowledge in industrial automation and DAS/MET stations for microgrids and/or low generation projects. 
  • Experience with IEC 61850, Modbus, OPC UA, and other control system protocols. 
  • Familiarity with protective relays, substation, and renewable energy automation systems. 
  • Experience with SEL RTAC, IED architecture design, and configuration. 
  • Familiarity with NERC-CIP cyber security standards and IEEE 1547 inverters. 
  • Experience with OT single-mode fiber optic network design and network troubleshooting tools. 
  • Strong experience in reviewing commissioning reports and diagnostics analysis. 
  • Familiarity with FERC, ISO rules, and standards. 
  • Experience with SCADA software programming, SCADA historians, and MS SQL servers. 
  • Knowledge of Inductive Automation Ignition 7.x or 8.x software. 
  • Experience with communication protocols for base-level devices: Modbus, Modbus TCP, OPC, DNP3, SEL Fast Message, IEC 61850, ICCP. 
  • Experience with automation control systems: RTAC programming, Rockwell PLC, and Control Logix programming. 
  • Experience with complete SCADA system project life cycles and power utility scale SCADA system development. 
  • Experience with FAT and SAT testing and documentation. 
  • Working knowledge of utility meters, substation RTAC, and protection relays. 
  • Knowledge of managed switches, networking, security, and firewalls. 
  • Proven experience with SCADA systems operations, controls narrative, and DAS/control systems. 
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and determination to complete projects. 
  • Ability to improve processes and create efficiencies. 
  • High professional ethics and ability to work both independently and in a team. 
  • Effective interface with cross-functional employee groups at all levels.
