Wholesale Power Markets Analyst

Overview:

This hire will be on MN8’s Revenue & Commodities team, specifically focusing on North American Power Markets, reporting to the Senior Director, and working closely with the Asset Management, Engineering, and Technical Operations Teams. They would support solar and battery storage assets that operate in numerous ISOs/RTOs, from PPA interpretation to strategy optimization and implementation.

Responsibilities:

To start, this position will work with Power Markets, Strategy, and the firms Energy Manager’s to develop and implement various solar asset & battery storage bid strategies, including:

  • Steward the creation of, and maintain an automated bid submittal process
  • Identify revenue opportunities through ISO/RTO product participation, including potential hedge strategies, and patterns that positively/negatively impact revenue
  • Analyze asset generation profile and settlement ensuring data quality and verity in alignment with expectations and contract terms

Additionally, this hire would support the continued build out of the Power markets team assisting in numerous initiatives including, but not limited to, creating various market playbooks aiding our operating portfolio, development pipeline, and due diligence efforts for potential acquisitions. The candidate should have the ability to:

  • Interpret ISO/RTO tariffs & manuals and articulate impacts in a succinct review
  • Stay apprised of market changes potentially impacting asset PnL
  • Provide critical power market analysis and assumptions into revenue model construction
  • Identify process improvements and propose new solutions for organizational readiness

As MN8’s portfolio of assets expands, this candidate will have the opportunity to take on more responsibility, shaping the development, creation and growth of future processes, groups, and initiatives.

Requirements:

  • 2-5+ years of experience in the energy sector, with a preference for experience in any of the North American Power Markets (PJM, NYISO, CAISO, ERCOT, ISO-NE, MISO)
  • Bachelor’s Degree is a requirement, with a preference for technical backgrounds (e.g., economics, engineering, finance, etc.); more advanced education is valued but not necessary
  • Solid understanding of Wholesale Market constructs, functions, and basic settlement understanding
  • Firm grasp on factors impacting market volatility (transmission/congestion, outages, price composition, etc.)
  • Hands on renewable asset market participation and integration (Solar, Wind, Battery Storage)
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate technical information and strategic goals
  • Proactive and forward-thinking attitude and creative problem-solving ability
  • A motivated self-starter who can work independently in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment

Preferred (not required):

  • Behind the meter or demand response resource participation
  • Coincident Peak methodology and management (e.g., demand charges, peak load shaving, etc.)
  • Reactive Power framework
  • Retail or load side pricing and hedging

 

In New York City, the base salary for this position at the time of this posting ranges from $90,000 to $150,000. Within that range, individual compensation varies based on job-related factors including but not limited to experience and training, licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs.
